Spring Festival is a big deal in China. Everything closes down, and stays closed for a long time.

2 Days after we get back from Thailand, we got snow!

Got to keep your head dry somehow!

Its the year of the dragon....

Our daughter....

We got this letter about our baby girl today. I know its long, but maybe someone is intrested!

She was the happiest baby at the care center, I swear!  My mom and I were
just cracking up because every single time we would look at her she had
moved on to some other item.  She was exploring the entire room and EVERY
little thing in it.  She related well to us and to the nannies, yet she was
perfectly content to just be exploring on her own.  She wasn't "needy" like
some of the poor little babies are.  She crawls really well and kneels down
when she finds something to inspect.  She will turn the item over intently
and study it.  Then she will try to bang it on the floor or her lap and see
what it does.  Sometimes she would try things in her mouth, but not
everything.  She seemed quite discerning in that aspect.  She knew pure junk
from something worth testing in her mouth :-)  At one point I took a little
piece of trash away from her and she just gave me a smile and moved on to
something else.

They have a stroller that the strap mobile kids into for her their own
safety when they need to coral the kiddo for a few minutes to attend to a
blow-out diaper or something where they can't go grab to mobile kid away
from something they shouldn't have or pull them back inside the room, etc.
Basically, if they need to give another baby complete attention for a couple
minutes, they have to immobilize several of the more explorative babies
(those being your girl and my twin boys).  So they strap them in a stroller
while they take care of what they need to and then they let them back out of
the stroller.  Your daughter is hilarious when they put her in there.  She
makes this face like, "Oh, MAN!  This again?!  I gotta get outta here!"  And
she sits and watches them with this adorable little bummed look on her face
and tries to reach up to whoever walks by to have them get her out.

Anyway, she looks incredibly happy and healthy and she is going to keep you
busy :-)  They call her "gobez" which means clever.

Past Few Weeks....

Proud Parents

One of the things parents worry about most is the idea we are somehow messing up our children! I think that is especially true of people who live overseas. We wonder do our children fit in, will they adjust, can they have a normal life that they deserve?
The past two weeks we have been in Thailand. We can not have meetings with our co-workers in China, so we all meet in Thailand once a year (every other year now) and have fun and fellowship. Following that time, we went to a wonderful resort near Hua Hin. It just so happened that most of the other families at the resort were like us; Americans teaching in China.
We were able to see the boys interact with many different kids, and compare their behavior to theirs. It was so comforting to us, to see that our boys are doing ok. Its just confirmation that the one who calls you is faithful to give you what you need!

This Afternoon....

There was a fire in an apartment in our building. We live in the 2nd entrance, and the apartment with the fire was in the 4th. So it was close. We smelled the smoke, heard the sirens, and saw the crowds of people.

This was the first fire that I have seen in China. The firemen let people get very close, and they even let people smoke while watching! I tried to get a picture of that, but it did not turn out!

Anyway, we now have two young impressionable boys who want to be fire fighters!

Domestic Violence

I have been wondering what to write about, and a friend suggested I blog about our neighbors. That actually goes along with what Renee suggested, so off we go….

Our building is unique, in that our building only has 3 apartments per floor. We live on the "unlucky 13th floor; people in China are not superstitious, but we are the only occupants. So we have neighbors, but they are two empty apartments which is nice!

But there is something else I wanted to blog about. Its a problem we have always known about, but are seeing more and more. It is the problem of domestic violence.

I am not an expert on this, and do not claim to be. But I have included child abuse in this as well.

Renee had a student. This student is a good girl. She is spoiled, and can be bratty..but she is only 9. She is supposed to be! Several times in the past year or so, she has come over with bruises and marks on her. One time, she took a break to use the bathroom, and her Mom went in as well, and when they started class again, this young girl had a bloody lip.

Last week, the boys and  I were not home, when Renee texted me about something that was happening upstairs. She told me there was a violent argument going on, with screaming and things being broken. We talked about what can we do….and came to the sad realization that the answer is nothing.

There is no anonymous reporting here, and even if the police answered the phone, they don't care. Yes, there are laws on the books, but they are not enforced.
All we can do, is just help those when they need it, and pray for minds and attitudes to be changed. For the parents and men to begin to respect their families and children. Doesn't seem like much, but its a step in the right direction
